One witness said: "It's badly damaged and still burning but all the staff are safe. No one has been hurt. It's such a shame as it is a historical building."

The Dirty Habit sits on the Pilgrims Way and dates back to the 11th century. It was used as an inn by monks on their way to Canterbury.

It is now run by pub chain Elite.

Elsewhere in Kent the Chilton Tavern pub on the corner of Downs Road and Pegwell Road in Ramsgate is also ablaze.

Residents reported a loud explosion before flames took hold.
