Maidstone: Family rescued by fire crews after car stranded on flooded road in Strickfast Lane, Sutton Valence

A family had to be rescued late last night after being stranded inside their car on a flooded road in Maidstone.

Three fire engines and crews in water rescue gear were called to Strickfast Lane in Sutton Valence just after 11pm after the vehicle had become stuck in two feet of flood water.

Firefighters managed to push the car out of the water and free the adult and two children inside, who did not report any injuries.

Off the back of the incident, fire chiefs are urging motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded roads during this period of extreme weather.

Group manager for community safety Leanne McMahon said: "The water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast, resulting in you and your vehicle being at risk of being swept away or becoming stranded.

"There may also be hazards under the water you can't see. Don't take the risk, it's best to find an alternative route."

Friday night also saw further chaos on the roads, as heavy snow caused disruption on major routes including the M2, A249, A21 and A2
