Firefighters battle Tonbridge house blaze

A house fire broke out in Tonbridge this afternoon, while many firefighters were on strike over pensions.

The blaze broke out in the first floor of the property in Hectorage Road at around 2.10pm.

Crews attended within five minutes and wore breathing apparatus to search the home.

There are no reports of any injuries but the road has been cordoned off while the emergency services make the area safe.

The fire took place as many firefighters across Kent went on strike over pensions between midday and 4pm.

Chief Executive of Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Ann Millington, said: "We had a fire engine there within five minutes and a second was sent for extra back up.

"There were no casualties and crews managed to create a fire break in the roof between the two properties to help prevent the fire spreading next door.

“I would like to thank those staff who worked today and who did a good job in providing this important emergency service going for Kent and Medway.”
