Fireworks display at Leeds Castle in Maidstone still going ahead, despite weather warning

Kent's biggest fireworks display is going ahead despite a weather warning.

Thousands were expected to attend this evening's annual event at Leeds Castle in Maidstone, with 25,000 starbursts set to fill the sky.

But a weather warning and heavy rain and strong winds in the Maidstone area this morning prompted fears from ticket holders the event may be cancelled.

A statement on Leeds Castle's Twitter page says: "We are monitoring the weather conditions closely but this evening's 'Fireworks Spectacular' will still be going ahead.

"We advise all ticket holders to allow plenty of time to arrive.

"The car parks will open at 1pm and gates at 2pm.

"Please do not leave it until the last minute because of the weather, get here early and enjoy the afternoon's entertainment!"

The Met Office yellow weather warning for winds of up to 60mph came into force at 4am and lasts until 6pm tonight and has already caused one firework display to be cancelled.

The fireworks kick off at 5.30pm and kmfm Drivetime presenter Rob Wills will be getting the party started with a live DJ set.

Meanwhile, kmfm Breakfast's Garry and Laura will be there for the countdown.
