Flood alerts issued for Maidstone, Canterbury, Herne Bay, Yalding, Sheppey and Great Chart

Flood alerts have been issued for parts of Kent tonight and into tomorrow.

The Environment Agency has put out six alerts, warning that flooding is possible and residents should be prepared in Maidstone, Canterbury, around Herne Bay, Yalding, on Sheppey and in Great Chart, near Ashford.

River levels have risen as a result of persistent rainfall and flooding at the Lower River Medway, with roads and low lying land affected, is expected overnight from 3am.

This is similar for Lower River Stour, with flooding expected from midnight while it's expected at Plenty, Swalecliffe and West Brooks from 10pm tonight.

The River Beult from Pluckley and Bethersden to Hampstead Lock at Yalding could flood from 10.30pm while Scrapsgate Drain around Parklands Village, and Warden Bay Drain around Warden holiday villages on Sheppey could flood overnight.

Flooding at the Upper River Stour, with roads and low lying land affected, is expected to continue overnight and into tomorrow.

The flood information service says: "Our incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if required."

Meanwhile, flooding has already led to the closure of Mill Lane in Yalding.
