Owner of Harper's gift shop in Maidstone, Kate Joy, has put the business up for sale

A business which has been a firm feature of Maidstone’s retail map is up for sale.

Harper’s in Market Buildings is being sold by owner Kate Joy as a going concern through agents Apex.

It was a first business venture for Mrs Joy, who took it on eight years ago.

She had spent 23 years working in the food industry previously, starting out at Trebor in the town, before opting for a change of direction.

The gift shop, which has eight part-time staff, specialises in selling items which cannot be found elsewhere, from designer kitchenware to handpainted crockery. It also has a cafe inside.

Mrs Joy said: “I have loved it. I have lovely customers and the staff deserve somebody nice to come in and carry it on.

“I will be very sad to see it go, but needs must.”

During her time there, she has also been an advocate of independent businesses.

She is selling the firm to concentrate on business commitments she has in France.

She has set up a twitter account for the sale, which is @harpersforsale.
