Winter Olympian Lizzy Yarnold misses out in bid to be named Sports Personality of the Year

Kent's very own Lizzy Yarnold didn't make it into the top three in tonight's BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The annual TV show, which was shown live from Birmingham, saw Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas crowned the winner.

In second place was Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and in third came England football captain Harry Kane.

Former Maidstone Grammar School for Girls' pupil Lizzy, 30, was one of six nominees.

The remaining two were England cricket star James Anderson and top athlete Dina Asher-Smith.

Lizzy, who grew up in West Kingsdown, is Britain's greatest-ever Winter Olympian having successfully defended her Skeleton title in South Korea this year.

During the course of her career, she secured five gold medals, one silver and two bronzes at international level.

She announced her retirement in October.

Other winners tonight included England football manager Gareth Southgate, who won coach of the year and the England netball team who scooped the team of the year award.
