Homes on Waterlow Road in Maidstone without gas after leak

At least two homes in Maidstone are without gas after a leak was discovered yesterday - days after residents complained of smelling gas.

People on Waterlow Road, along with those living in Salisbury Road, Lower Boxley Road, Hardy Street and Well Road complained to gas company SGN after smelling what they thought was gas on Sunday.

Initially engineers didn't find a leak and left without carrying out any work.

The smell lingered for those on Waterlow Road however, and yesterday two homes had their gas supply cut off while work on a leak is carried out.

The residents who are currently without gas have been told that this may remain the case for up to a week.

One such resident is trying to take it in their stride and said: "It's not that bad. The only thing is I don't have an oven.

"They [SGN] have given me temporary hobs but that's not an oven. Cooking is a bit of a struggle."

A spokeswoman for SGN said: "We can confirm that we currently have two properties without gas in the Waterlow Road area of Maidstone.

"A gas escape was reported at this location earlier this week and this led to supplies at two flats in the vicinity being cut off.

"Since then we have been working on resolving the repair which is required. After preparation work, we're aiming to carry out the repair tomorrow (Friday)."
