TV and media personality Janet
Street-Porter joined hundreds of students marking the end of their
studies in Maidstone.

She was presented with an honorary
degree by the University for the Creative Arts at a ceremony on
Friday at All Saints' Church Maidstone.

It was her media work, which
includes being editor of the Independent on Sunday newspaper from
1999 and fashion editor of the Daily Mail that prompted the
University to make its offer to her.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ms
Street-Porter, who has a home in Kent, said she had dropped out of
her architectural degree but had still gone on to become a Fleet
Street reporter aged 21.

She said: "I hope I can be a role
model and inspiration to the students to show you can make it, even
though I don’t fit the mould and don’t come from a particularly
academic background. So it is great to finally get a degree!"

She added: "Today has been a
tremendous occasion because all these people have worked hard for
their degrees."

Around 300 students graduated from
the university, which is based at Oakwood Park, Maidstone.
