Drivers in lanes one and two slowed and eventually stopped in order to avoid colliding with the maimed bird.

Traffic officers from Highways England attended the scene and removed the bird from the motorway.

Traffic in the area, which was at a standstill, has now eased.

A Tweet from the road authority said: "Update: traffic officers are on scene.

"The member of public's vehicle and the swan have been moved out of the live lane and all lanes are now flowing as normal again."
