Tiny little hats, mittens and jackets the length of just a finger.
They are the work of a group of kind-hearted volunteers who knit and sew them for still-born and very premature babies born at Maidstone Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury.
Tanya Wright, a counsellor who runs a practice in Hadlow Road focusing on pregnancy loss, and her group of 15 volunteers have been providing them without fanfare for several years, just handing them over at the reception desk, without leaving any forwarding address.
But after the KM got in touch with the NHS trust to reveal where the clothes were coming from, staff at Pembury invited Tanya in to personally thank her on behalf of all her volunteers for their ‘Little Love’ project.
Matron Jenny Head said: “We are incredibly grateful to Tanya and her team for this fantastic donation of clothes for babies on our Neonatal Unit.
“Having a baby which is being cared for on the unit is daunting for parents and the last thing they want to think about is buying suitable clothing.
“Donations such as this ensure that small items, which are often hard to come by, are available for parents when they need them.”
Tanya, 41, said: “It was wonderful to be able to see the store room where they keep the clothes.
“I was taken on a tour of the special care unit and saw at first hand the wonderful work our nurses there are doing to help these babies survive.
“It was an emotional visit, and now they know who we are, we’ve been asked to always let them know when we next come in. We’ll no longer deliver anonymously.”
