Listed building set for flats conversion

A grade II listed building is to be converted into flats.
Planning permission has been granted to renovate Bedford Place just outside Maidstone town centre.
The building, which stands at the junction of London Road and Bedford Place was home to Maidstone council’s planning department in the 1970s.
Its office space will be transformed into seven flats, the majority of which will be two-bedroom.

Two semi-detached houses will also be erected at the back of the building, which received listed status in 1951.
A single-storey extension will be demolished to make way for the properties.
Residents had raised concerns about lack of privacy afforded by the new development whose applicant is a Mr M Folb.
Planners ruled it would not have “significant additional windows” and therefore wouldn’t lead to “overshadowing”.
