Winger Warren Whitely has returned to Chelmsford after Maidstone rejected the chance to sign him.

Whitely, pictured, spent two months on loan at the Gallagher Stadium but failed to convince boss Jay Saunders he was worth a permanent deal.

Saunders said: "We won’t be signing him. He did well for us but he’s not what we’re looking for at the moment.

"He was happy to stay and Chelmsford offered him to us but we already have Kaiyne Woolery and he has a lot to give."

Saunders remains hopeful of completing a deal to sign midfielder Alex Brown until the end of the season. He has made an offer to the youngster who is free to leave Gillingham.

United added former Ebbsfleet winger Ben Greenhalgh to their squad at the end of last week and he made his debut in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Crawley Down.

Greenhalgh, who won Sky TV show Football’s Next Star in 2010, was a free agent after Fleet cancelled his registration.

Stones also signed Josh Hare on work experience from Gillingham.
