The suspect is then said to have become aggressive and spat in the face of an officer.

Mr Spearpoint, of Charter Street, Chatham was later charged with five counts of assault on an emergency worker, under the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act.

He was also charged with causing criminal damage to a police cell, racially aggravated public order, shoplifting, possession of cannabis and use of threatening behaviour.

He appeared before Medway magistrates on Monday and was bailed to next appear at Maidstone Magistrates' Court on February 21.

The Assaults on Emergency Workers Act came into force in November 2018 and created a new offence of assault against emergency workers - including police, paramedics, nurses and other blue light workers.

It also provides tougher sentencing powers for judges.
