Those travelling on the route at around 5.30am faced delays while the emergency services worked at the scene, where a damaged car could be seen.

Congestion is still backing up to Junction 7 for Detling Hill despite all lanes having reopened just before 2pm.

A detour was in place where drivers were asked to use the feeder link road running parallel.

A police spokesperson said officers were called just after 5am.

Patrols and staff from National Highways attended the scene where no injuries were reported and the vehicle was recovered.

Police left the scene just before 9am but but highways officers remained at the road managing lane closures while the barrier was repaired.

National Highway bosses said on X earlier this afternoon: “Barrier crews are in attendance and carrying out the required repairs.

“Please be aware of moderate delays on approach.”
