Maidstone Museum launches pop-up exhibition where people can share memories of County Town

People who work, live and play in Maidstone are being asked to share their memories of the County Town in a pop-up museum exhibition.

As part of a larger transformation project, Maidstone Museum is wanting locals and visitors to help create a recent social history account of the region.

With the help of £4,000 funding from the Arts Council, and in collaboration with the Maidstone Museum Foundation and Fremlin Walk, the venue has opened its own ‘pop-up shop’ as an audience engagement point.

Over the coming weeks, staff will ask for opinions of the museum and the transformation project, including what people would like to see there and whether they would like to see artefacts exhibited in themes or in chronological order.

There are also a number of fun activities available including dressing up, memory bunting and a huge map of Maidstone to pin reminiscences to.

The museum will be using the information and feedback collected during the project to evaluate how things could be done differently and to inform the Arts Council of the pop-up's success.

People who take part in the memory collection before December 30 can enter a prize draw for four tickets to the Hazlitt Theatre Pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, on New Year’s Eve, or could win a private tour of the museum’s Observatory Tower.

Victoria Barlow, Maidstone Museum manager, said: “This is a really exciting time for the museum.

"We are passionate about engaging with Maidstone residents, hearing their memories of the town and sharing their thoughts on the transformation plans.

"We want as many people as possible to be a part of this fabulous project.”

The ‘pop-up’ shop can be found on Fremlin Walk in the town and is open at weekends until January 5, between 10am and 3pm on Saturdays and from 11am to 3pm on Sundays.
