Now showing - our picture archives

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

More than 100 images showing a slice of Maidstone life through the ages went on show to the public today.

Hundreds of shoppers browsed the pictures being displayed in The Mall Chequers, Maidstone, until Saturday as part of News in Pictures – a Kent Messenger 150th Anniversary Photographic Exhibition.

The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Denise Joy, with Kent Messenger Group president Edwin Boorman and KM editor Bob Bounds.

Cllr Joy said: “It is lovely to look back and see what you remember – and what you don’t. My family religiously cut out and keep every photo of me, good and bad, that goes in the KM. It is going to be great to look back for me and the grandchildren in years to come.

“I hope hundreds and hundreds of people are going to stop and enjoy this exhibition.”

She added: “It makes you so grateful that they are kept in the archives.”

Mr Boorman spoke of the changing face of technology and how many pictures are now online. “Pictures are a window on our world,” he said.

The KM has teamed up with Kent on Canvas, The Mall Chequers and the Kent County Photographic Association to bring it to you.

You can visit the exhibition throughout this week until Saturday evening, and you can buy copies of the photos by visiting the Kent On Canvas website or from this site, by clicking on Services, above.
