Lucas De Groot from Zeeland in the Netherlands walks through Maidstone town centre to protest against nuclear submarines

A Dutch national on a one man protest against nuclear submarines has made it to Maidstone after a 2,000 mile walk across Britain.

Lucas De Groot, who used to run an alternative medicine hospital in his native Zeeland, was walking through the town centre today carrying a cart covered in banners that argue against the weapons.

The 62-year-old first landed in Hull on April 20 and has been staying in Quaker centres.

He said: "I think half of people are against nuclear submarines, the other half in favour.

"Britain four nuclear submarines and now the government want to replace them at a cost of £100 billion.

"My calculations say you can build one million homes, train 800,000 teachers or build 1,500 hospitals with that money.

"These are not made for defending the UK, they are made for attacking."

Since arriving in the north by ferry he has marched across the country, stopping off at places including the Lake District, Wales and Devon.

He is carrying little more than the clothes he has on his back and is slowly making his way to Dover before his wife collects him in Dunkirk.
