Operation Stack in place between M20 Junction 8 for Harrietsham and the A20 and Junction 9 for Ashford

Operation Stack has been stood down 16 hours after it was put in place on a busy section of motorway.

The coastbound section of the M20 was closed between Junction 8 for the A20 at Harrietsham and Junction 9 for Ashford at 8pm last night.

The police-led operation was installed due to poor weather conditions in the English Channel, with HGVs destined for Dover port held on the section of motorway until the conditions improved.

A diversion route along the A20 was in place for light vehicles approaching the closure.

While road users further afield travelling towards Dover were asked to consider using the A2 and M2.

The road was reopened shortly before midday.
