Maidstone parkrun cancelled due to flooding

Maidstone's parkrun was cancelled this morning due to flooding.

Organisers of the popular 5km run, which normally takes place every Saturday, were forced to call it off this week after the River Medway burst its banks due to heavy rainfall over the past few days.

The announcement was made on the Maidstone Parkrun Facebook page.

Runners were directed to alternative courses at Great Lines, Sittingbourne, Malling, Shorne Woods or Cyclopark.

It is hoped Maidstone's run will be back as normal next week, weather permitting.

The free event starts at Kent Life in Lock Lane, Sandling, and follows a scenic riverside route - down Allington Lock, along the towpath past Allington Castle, around Whatman Park, finishing back at Kent Life.

A flood warning remains in place for the River Medway between Yalding and Maidstone, with water levels very high this morning.

Flooding of vulnerable properties is likely to continue during the day particularly around Bow Bridge.

The lake at Mote Park has also flooded the surrounding pathways.

However, the risk of further property flooding is now reducing, but impacts of this week's weather on roads, low-lying land and homes is likely to continue until tomorrow morning.

Little Venice Country Park in Yalding was once again one of the worst hit parts of the county, with more than 40 residents forced to flee their homes yesterday.

And more than 60 roads were closed due to the weather, with people rescued from their cars after they became submerged in water.
