Part of M20 to close this weekend for essential maintenance, Highways England warns

Highways England is advising those intending to use the M20 this weekend to plan ahead as part of the motorway will close for essential maintenance.

The section between Junction 8 for Maidstone and Junction 9 for Ashford will be shut overnight tonight (Friday) and Saturday while barrier maintenance and technology repairs are carried out and litter is cleared from the carriageway.

The closures will be in both directions and will be from 8pm until 6am each night.

All vehicles - other than Channel-bound freight going to the Eurotunnel - will need to follow the diversion route, via the A20.

The M20 carriageway, between Junctions 8 and 9, is operating a contraflow system under Operation Brock to help manage freight heading to the cross-Channel ports.

Operation Brock is a series of measures that improve Kent’s resilience in the event of disruption to services across the English Channel and was put in place just before Christmas.

Channel-bound freight going to the Eurotunnel will still be able to use the M20 coastbound during the closure and should continue to follow signs directing them through to the Brock freight holding area.

HGVs heading to the Port of Dover are reminded they should follow the signs to Manston.
