Sheerness teenager arrested on suspicion of intending to supply Class A drugs during operation with sniffer dog in Maidstone town centre

Police with a sniffer dog arrested a teenage boy on suspicion of intending to supply Class A drugs.

The 17-year-old, from Sheerness, was stopped in Maidstone town centre during the evening of Saturday, January 29, when officers were out in force with the trained animal.

The teen was searched and later arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. He has been released on bail until Monday, April 6.

Four other people were detained during the night and issued with formal warning for cannabis possession.

Insp Jody Gagan-Cook, from Kent Police, said: "The number of people we identified is very low in comparison to the number of people who socialise in Maidstone as a whole.

"Possession and use of drugs are criminal offences but they tend to be associated other offences, such as violence.

"I hope the presence of these officers across the town will have deterred offences on the night, but also for future occasions as people realise that if they bring drugs into the town centre in Maidstone they run a very real risk of being caught."

The dog handlers were assisted on the operation by volunteer officers from the Kent Special Constabulary.
