Large section of M20 and M26 closed for police incident

Parts of the M20 and M26 were closed after police received reports of concerns for the welfare of a man in the area.

The incident began at around 8am and officers are still at the scene.

The M20 London bound junction 3 for M26 to junction 2 for Tonbridge was closed until around midday.

The M26 coastbound junction 2A for Gravesend to junction 3 for M20 reopened shortly after and the M20 coastbound between junction 2 for Tonbridge to junction 4 for West Malling reopened just before 1pm.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and use the following diversions:

  • M20 London bound traffic are being diverted via the hollow square diversion symbol.
  • Exit the M20 at J3 on to the M26 westbound
  • Exit the M26 at J2a on to the A20 towards London
  • Continue on the A20 to rejoin M20 at J2

Road users heading towards Dover are advised to re-route using the A2 or M2.

One motorist who was heading to Sevenoaks said: "The coastbound carriageway was held on the bridge that goes over the M20 at around 8.32am."
