Maidstone's riverside will come alive this weekend when the town's River Festival returns after a year's absence.

Boats have already begun to gather along the River Medway in anticipation of Saturday's festivities.

The official opening will take place at noon by Maidstone council leader, Cllr Chris Garland, and cabinet member, Cllr John A Wilson.

Stages featuring music and entertainment will be set up at Brenchley Gardens, the Archbishop's Palace, and on the river itself in two barges donated to the event by Port Werburgh.

The raft race, sponsored by Strata, will be making a splash from 2.30pm and the illuminated boat procession will be staged by boatowners from 9.45pm.

A firework finale will light up the sky from around 10.30pm.

Chairman Martin Cox said: "Everyone knows about the music and merriment of the River Festival, but the most important message this year is to bring water, sunhats, and cream, as we are expecting very warm temperatures."

On sale this year for the first time will be t-shirts featuring the festival logo, designed by artist Graham Clarke.

The event is free, although any money raised will go to the Maidstone Sea Cadets.

Volunteers are still being sought to help with marshaling the event. If you can give two hours during the day, contact Mr Cox on 07970 723975.
