Maidstone marks Chinese New Year with spectacular event starting in Fremlin Walk

Spectators were spellbound during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Maidstone today.

Children pet the lions which led a procession through the town centre and audiences were entertained by Thomas Stell, from the London Chinese Opera Studio.

The event was kicked-off by the traditional dotting of the eye ceremony at 12pm in Fremlin Walk, to bring in the new year.

The Kudos Combat Lion Dance Team controlled the fearsome felines and the day was organised by the Maidstone Cultural Group and Cohesion Plus, an organisation which arranges festivals.

Chinese New Year celebrations have not been seen in the town since 2017, because of a lack of funding.

However, this year enough money was raised to put on the show, thanks to donations from Arts Council England, councillors and other organisations.
