Albino squirrel pops up in Maidstone

Squirrels! It's that time of year when suddenly they seem to be everywhere.

Whether it's the lack of foliage on the trees makes them more visible, or just that they are more active as they hurriedly store up food supplies for the winter, they have been popping up all over Kent.

In Maidstone, Julie Caseygrove took this photo of a white squirrel in the wood at Penenden Heath during an autumn stroll. The white coat is not some kind of winter colouring, but rather a genetic defect, this albino squirrel is white all year round.

Philip Anderson spotted this one in a garden in Penenden Heath. But maybe it's the same chap?

But this fellow is definitely different. He was snapped by Gemma Seacombe in a tree near Chatham Cemetery.

Meanwhile Simon Tilling went for a walk near Tonbridge Castle and realised that he hadn't seen any trains running on the miniature railway behind the town's swimming pool for quite some time.

"Could it be because of the wrong type of squirrel on the line?" he asked.
