Three parking machines have been stolen from one town.

The machines owned by Maidstone Borough Council disappeared over the weekend - two from Mote Park, and one from the College Road car park in Maidstone.

It is assumed they were stolen for their cash contents.

A council spokesman said: "Fortunately, due to the majority of people now paying for their parking electronically or by card, the actual amount of money taken from the machines was negligible.

"We are working to reinstall the machines and will also look at increasing security measures for the equipment to prevent them or others being taken in the future."

The council assured motorists desperate to pay their parking fee that "all council car parks offer cashless car parking transactions through our partner RingGo."

In addition, one parking machine remains in use at College Road.
