Maidstone's Robbie Farnham-Rose insists he can head into his break with his head held high after ending his season in style at the Aviva English Schools’ Track and Field Championships in Gateshead.

The 18-year-old (pictured) headed to the Gateshead International Stadium looking to continue his fine season, which saw him claim 1,500m victory at the England Under-20 Championships last month.

And the Tonbridge AC starlet was at it again, Farnham-Rose claiming senior boys 1,500m gold as he crossed the line in 3mins 49.09secs.

This was the last major competition pencilled in on Farnham-Rose’s calendar and the Malling School pupil was left to reflect on a season’s job well done.

“I wasn’t really sure going into the final how I would fare. I won the nationals and during my heat it didn’t really feel right but I gave it a go,” said Farnham-Rose, who follows in some illustrious footsteps by claiming a medal at the English Schools – London 2012-bound Jess Ennis, Jack Green and Andy Turner having all started their careers at Aviva Athletics Academy schemes.

“It was a lot harder than the nationals and when the line was in sight I was tightening up but I am really happy with the win.

“It was quite a fast race and I expected it to be tactical and then a last 500m burner but this time it was fast the whole way and there was a bunch of us with about 300m to go and I just went for it and looked behind and knew I had it.

“This was my fourth time and I feel I have just gained so much experience from previous years and this year it was brilliant to come back and win with my last run of the season.

“I am going to try and fit in a few more races to get a quicker time but as far as championships this was the most important so I am really pleased to end with the victory.”

Fellow Tonbridge AC starlet Matthew Blandford was also in action in the north east, also climbing the top step of the podium as his best effort of 50.79m comfortably saw him take home inter discus gold.

And there was more golden joy for the county as Invicta East Kent’s Bobby Clay (pictured) recorded a new personal best time of 4mins 25.55secs to claim inter 1,500m gold by almost five seconds from her nearest rival Abbie Hetherington.

“I am really pleased with how well the race went and obviously the gold is great but to get a new personal best is even better,” 15-year-old Clay said.

“It’s great fun to be part of a team and one day I hope to be a professional athlete. I am so excited that I’ll be watching my heroes this summer and I hope it will make a huge difference for our athletes to know that we will all be backing the team.”
