Injuries reported included chest pain and two patients were treated at the scene before being taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital and Maidstone Hospital.

A force spokesman said: "The road remains closed whilst the vehicles are recovered."

The crash happened right at the junction which obstructed traffic coming from Leeds Road and has been causing delays on Plough Wents Road and Horseshoes Lane.

Motorists say traffic is still at a standstill at 7.20pm and several drivers have been turning around in an attempt to find another way home.

One driver, who lives near Ashford, took three hours to get home from Medway after being caught up in the delays and having to go via Cranbrook.

The queues eventually cleared at around 8.40pm.
