Suspected 'wartime bomb' discovered in woodland in Sandling, Maidstone

A bomb disposal unit was called after a suspected "wartime bomb" was found in woodland.

Martin Simpson was out walking in woods in Sandling, Maidstone last week and noticed "an old flagstone enclosure for fresh water" near the Lower Grange Farm scout hut.

In the middle of the enclosure was what he believed to be a "World War Two bomb with an engineered boss on top".

Mr Simpson said the metal ball had " smashed through the flagstone on landing".

Police were called to reports of a suspected munitions device in woods near Sandling Lane in Maidstone at around 5pm on Sunday.

Officers attended alongside Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts from the Ministry of Defence, who confirmed the item was not a wartime device and did not present a threat to public safety.

A local resident says he believes it is instead a Victorian hydraulic ram pump.

Mr Simpson added: "I am puzzled by this as it did not sound empty when tapped it.

"I could not believe it's been there 75 years unnoticed."
