Maidstone Mela cultural festival returns to Mote Park next weekend

A celebration of around the world music, dance and food will return next weekend.

Maidstone Mela will be held in Mote Park, Mote Avenue on Sunday, September 10.

The free community event, hosted by Cohesion Plus, will take place from 12pm to 6pm.

Creative Director for the organisation, Gurvinder Sandher, said: “The Mela will once again boast an exciting programme of culturally diverse artists, the majority of whom are Kent-based acts.”

Opening the mela will be African song and dance group, Uzambezi who will be followed by Bulgarian folk group, Kitka, and SEND talent group Square Pegs.

Also performing will be various Indian and Nepalese groups, including bhangra dancers, King of Dhol.

Reggae band, One Love Orchestra will close the evening with renditions of Bob Marley & The Wailers hits.

“There will also be an excellent off-stage offering made up of partner agencies and food stalls offering flavours from all around the world,” said Gurvinder.

The Mela will aim to bring communities together and showcase the diversity of Maidstone.

It will be supported Maidstone Borough Council, Arts Council England and Maidstone Cultural Group.

Cllr Claudine Russell said:“ Everyone is invited to come along to enjoy this dazzling free afternoon of song and dance, celebrating culture in our County Town.”
