Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders can't believe FA Trophy collapse against Boreham Wood

Jay Saunders has never felt so frustrated in almost six years as Maidstone manager.

Stones were all over Boreham Wood in the first half of Tuesday night's FA Trophy first-round replay, leading through Ben Greenhalgh.

But they folded after the break, with Wood going 3-1 up before an injury-time consolation from Jamar Loza.

Saunders said: “It was a game of two halves and probably sums up our season to be honest.

“I thought we were in control, should have been two, possibly three up but we don’t take our chances and then come out second half and look a different side.

“The minute they scored it almost looked like we gave up and it sums us up as a team and our season at the moment.

"It’s probably the most frustrated I’ve been since I’ve been here but there you go."

Saunders made his feelings clear in the dressing room.

He added: "They had to be told a few home truths today.

"It’s a tricky one because you’ve got a big game Saturday but I don’t like losing games of football, it’s as simple as that, and I don’t see how you can go from a performance like that first half to what we got second half. I don’t know how that’s possible. It’s not acceptable."

Saunders revealed he's missed out on another transfer target.

A deal for a striker fell through last week and now a midfielder has gone elsewhere.

He said: "We had agreed something with a player in principle and then a full-time club came in and offered him a player-coach role so he’s gone there, which is a bit of a blow because he was an experienced midfielder that I think would have added to us."
