Sonny Miles' 82nd-minute own goal against his former club saw Maidstone held by Tonbridge on New Year's Day.

It was the third game running United have conceded a late equaliser and they've fallen four points behind Ryman League Premier Division leaders Margate.

And it was clear how much the result meant to hardworking Tonbridge who have taken four points against their Kent rivals this season.

Ben Greenhalgh gave Maidstone the lead in first-half injury-time after Matt Bodkin's shot was blocked.

It was tough on an Angels side who had edged a dull first half and seen Dee Okojie's 20-yard strike hit the bar.

But Stones finished the half well with decent efforts from Tom Mills and Greenhalgh from outside the box working Thomas Hadler shortly before the opener.

Stones looked in control after the break in front of a Gallagher Stadium sell-out crowd of 2,226.

Hadler saved well when Jack Parkinson played in Frannie Collin, with Greenhalgh's follow-up blocked.

Collin then fed Bodkin whose cross was volleyed over by the busy Alex Akrofi when well placed to score.

Steve Watt had a diving header from a Greenhalgh corner header cleared off the line - United's skipper claiming a goal - and seconds later Greenhalgh saw a penalty claim waved away following a challenge by Tommy Whitnell.

An excellent run from Akrofi moving into the last 10 minutes ended with him sidefooting wide. There may have been a pass on but he'd earned the right to shoot.

Maidstone couldn't shake off Angels and when Watt conceded a free-kick, Lee Carey's ball was turned in by Stones defender Miles.
