FA Cup: Maidstone United 0 Oldham Athletic 2 match report

Maidstone are out of the FA Cup after losing at home to League 2 Oldham in the second round.

A crowd of 3,560 - a competitive record at the Gallagher Stadium - saw a goal in each half send the Latics through to Monday’s third-round draw.

Oldham had a bit too much on the day, defender Peter Clarke giving them the lead and Chris O’Grady making sure with a late second.

With Blair Turgott injured, Simon Walton banned and Rob Swaine, Dan Wishart and Sean Shields all cup-tied, Harry Wheeler had some thinking to do.

His answer was to set up 4-4-2, with Aryan Tajbakhsh in central midfield alongside Olu Durojaiye and stand-in skipper Jack Paxman and Jack Powell out wide.

Maidstone could only name six substitutes and two of those, Cameron Williams and James Tingley, were academy boys.

The Stones, with Jake Cassidy and Elliott Romain together up front, didn’t have the personnel to sit back and be cautious, as in the previous rounds.

Oldham had early possession but the opening was pretty even with nothing to worry the keepers.

Maidstone’s weakness from set-pieces reared its head again, though, as Oldham took a 17th-minute lead.

Gevaro Nepomuceno swung a free-kick to the back post, Samuel Edmoundson sent it back across goal and veteran defender Clarke turned the ball home.

Oldham looked pretty comfortable after the the goal, looking sharp on the ball and keeping it for long spells.

Sam Surridge’s deflected strike hit the bar as Oldham went close to a second, shortly after Callum Lang headed over a cross from Nepomucino.

Maidstone were working hard and created a big chance at the end of the first half.

It was all about the endeavour of Cassidy down the right as he won the ball and squared for Romain but a first-time shot was comfortably saved.

Paxman blocked a Surridge header on the post early in the second half.

There was a nice move at the other end as Tajbakhsh’s pass played in Powell before Paxman’s lay-off was belted over by Durojaiye.

Maidstone were having a go and moments later Romain got the better of the defence and forced a good save from Daniel Iversen.

Oldham added their second in the 84th minute.

Former Leicester man O’Grady shook off his man, worked his way along the byline and squeezed the ball home at the near post, possibly off Alex Finney.

Michael Phillips and Ollie Muldoon had late efforts for the Stones.

Maidstone: Smith, Phillips, De Havilland, Finney (Florence 87mins), McLennan, Paxman, Durojaiye (Muldooon 75mins), Tajbakhsh, Powell, Cassidy, Romain. Subs not used: Strizovic, Richards, Williams, Tingley.

Attendance: 3,560 (426 away).
