Maidstone United boss Jay Saunders pleased with his side's positive approach in 1-0 win over Wealdstone

Jay Saunders hailed an improved Maidstone display after Tuesday's win over Wealdstone.

Stones, having recently lost to Yeovil in the FA Cup and then been pegged back to draw at Dartford in the league, climbed to third in National South with this victory at the Gallagher Stadium.

"I thought it was a big game for us after the last couple," Saunders said. "I don't think we've been at our best so I thought it was important we got a good performance.

"We started well, then we had a 10-minute spell where they had a bit of possession but after that, we were OK. Any chances they had were caused by sloppy mistakes by us but in general, I thought we were quite good.

"I'm just disappointed we've not scored a few more.

"We were a lot more positive in our play. We kept the ball better than we have in recent weeks.

"Wealdstone are a decent side so for me, that's a good three points."

Jay May scored the winner on 27 minutes, running onto Jack Paxman's through-ball to net his eighth goal of the season - and first in the league since September.

Saunders said: "With Jay, you can be critical of him and say he's not been great lately but all I would say is the service he's been getting has not been good enough lately. Everything we've been playing up to him has been a battle for him rather than good balls into him.

"Tonight it was a great through-ball from Pax and he's finished it nicely.

"If we did hit Jay, we were dropping things into him and giving him a chance.

"Of late, I think you could have played anyone up there and I don't think they'd have had too much joy because I don't think we've been getting enough crosses in the box or hitting him with enough quality.

"Tonight it was a lot better - and you saw a better performance from him."
