Maidstone United manager Harry Wheeler content with record despite dropping into National League bottom four

Maidstone are back in the National League bottom four but boss Harry Wheeler is satisfied with his record.

United have taken eight points from eight games under Wheeler going into Saturday's trip to Barnet.

They've slipped back into the relegation zone after Dagenham beat Dover on Tuesday night but that's of no concern to Wheeler at this stage of the season.

He said: "I don't count the first game against Harrogate because that wasn't my team, so it's eight points from seven games.

"We’re picking up points while we’re on a rebuilding period.

"For a club that I think had won one in eight and didn’t win in 17 last year, we’ll take eight points from the start when we’re rebuilding.

"You can’t worry about the table at this stage of the season. It’s not decided in November. I don’t really look at it.

"I wouldn’t go home and look, I wouldn’t make a point of looking.

"At this stage it’s all chop and change.

"Dagenham have done well recently, it keeps Dover down there and we’ve just got to worry about ourselves.

"I believe in the lads, I think we’ve got good enough players to get out of it.

"We’ve just got to keep going and keep pushing and reinventing the side and we’ll get there."

At 68, Barnet boss John Still is more than twice Wheeler's age.

The pair worked together at Dagenham and Wheeler admires Still, who led Maidstone to the Conference title in 1989.

Wheeler, 30, said: "John's a very experienced manager, a manager I look up to.

"We’re at complete opposite ends.

"I spoke to him on the phone the other day for about half an hour and I worked with him for a little bit at Dagenham as well.

"It’s going to be a tough game but it’s one I feel we can get something from.

"We’ll go there and we can frustrate them and get something from it."
