Harry Wheeler's time at Maidstone United in quotes

Harry Wheeler packed a lot into his short spell as Maidstone manager.

The club were looking for an experienced boss after Jay Saunders’ exit but were blown away by 30-year-old Wheeler during the interview process.

He breezed into the Gallagher on the back of a treble-winning season at Billericay and Maidstone were confident they had found their man.

There were sweeping changes, including five new signings in one day, and the team appeared to be on the up after two wins in his first three games.

But his reign started to unravel after a 5-2 loss at Havant - the first of five straight defeats - and his position looked untenable after the 3-1 defeat at Dover on Boxing Day saw fans demand a change.

Here, we take a look at some of the memorable quotes from Wheeler’s four months at the Gallagher following news of his exit.

“He's done a brilliant job here and we have to make it clear I'm not here to replace him.

"I don't think anyone can replace what he achieved and no one's here to do that.

"It's a brilliant achievement that he can hold with him for a very, very long time.

"We're here to give it something different now and hopefully have the same success."

"The shortlist we composed was a very strong list of applicants but on reflection Harry was just miles ahead in everything.

"He had everything we wanted and his passion for the game was second to none.

"I don't see the appointment as a risk at all. I see it as a massive step forward for the club at all levels.”

"There's ideas but there's good players here and everyone gets an opportunity.

"This is a blank canvas. Everyone gets their opportunity first and then we go, 'OK, where do we need to strengthen?'"

Wheeler vows to give everyone a chance but was soon making big changes to the squad

“If you're good enough, it's going to be longer.

"If I was worried about that then I'm worried about my ability.

"You do it until the end of the season and if you're good enough you will already have earned a new deal.”

A short contract didn’t worry the new manager

"You get that instant respect once people know you're good enough and the players will see that straight away.

"From there, there's never going to be an issue with experience.

"I've not met any 30-year-olds that have done 11 years."

Age was no issue for Wheeler after taking the job

“We learned a lot, more than we wanted to learn.

“That's probably a little bit harsh but it's a big eye-opener.

"You know some things and then I've just said to someone in there, once you see it, you really know it.”

Wheeler’s first game in charge ends in defeat

“I described him the other day as new-school but old-school.

“He knows what the game's all about now, he knows what you have to do to win games.

“But he still brings that old-school discipline and professionalism, whereas at some places everyone's got to have a philosophy and all these magical words that get thrown about here, there and everywhere.

“I hate that word, philosophy. You might get away with it in the Premier League but I'm not quite sure you need a philosophy down here.

“The philosophy is to get three points, surely?”

Simon Walton, after becoming Wheeler’s first signing

“All the hard work, from Saturday night last week when I was meant to be at a wedding, sitting there on the phone, till literally 5 o’clock yesterday, it was non-stop, so it’s been worth it.

“I got there very late and sat in the corner on my phone, so I wasn’t very sociable at all, but priorities…

No one could doubt Wheeler’s commitment as he chased new signings

"I’m not here to persuade people and ask people to work hard.

"If you don’t want to do it then you don’t have to be here."

Hard work was the minimum requirement under Wheeler

“I probably take a little bit of the flak for the first half. Maybe we didn’t set up well enough.

“We stayed with what we’ve been doing recently because it’s been working.”

Wheeler admits he got it wrong against Bromley

"I like to be ruthless on every single occasion and take advantage of every occasion.

"The most ruthless people are the people who get to the top in life.

"I don’t feel we’ve got enough of that at the moment.”

“I was Jay’s captain and it’s been a tough time with him going.

“It’s been a difficult period for the club, something I’ve been part of as well.

“Jay’s been brilliant for me and is someone I hold in high regard.

“It has been difficult with the change of manager but that’s nothing against Harry.

“It shouldn't be difficult to concentrate. We train regularly enough.

"I'm asking you to concentrate for an hour and 35 minutes out of 24 hours in your whole day, so it's not asking for a lot percentage-wise.”

“I don't count the first game against Harrogate because that wasn't my team, so it's eight points from seven games.

"We’re picking up points while we’re on a rebuilding period.

"For a club that I think had won one in eight and didn’t win in 17 last year, we’ll take eight points from the start when we’re rebuilding.”

Happy with progress after 1-1 draw at Ebbsfleet

“Sometimes it needs to have a little bit more of an aggressive environment at half-time to get a different reaction, and we managed to do that.

“It doesn’t come naturally to me as a character but it does when it’s down to my job, because it’s my life.

“I live and breathe it and if they’re messing with something that might affect my career then it’s comes very, very naturally.

Wheeler reveals how a dressing-room row triggered their FA Cup victory over Macclesfield

"You feel like you're always walking on eggshells where you play one game, you do well, you don't play the next game as well as he wants and then you're out the team.

"You're not going to gain momentum like that."

"Sometimes there’s no longevity in certain people’s quality."

Wheeler’s use of ‘they’ rather than ‘we’ upset a number of fans after defeat by Eastleigh

"He voiced his opinion and I tried to speak to him gently and he didn’t want to do that.

"You’re always open to have a conversation but we’re not open to take abuse.

"I think he was out of order.

"There’s a way to voice your opinion and there’s a way not to voice your opinion.

"You’ll get no respect back from us if you don’t give it the other way.”

Wheeler calls for respect after touchline argument with a fan during Eastleigh game

"They're great players and we don't need to keep tweaking it and we're not looking to tweak it any more.

"If the odd thing comes up or we have a long-term injury, then we'll look to strengthen again but at the moment we're quite happy with what's here."
