Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to tackle the flames in the kitchen.

A man was checked over by paramedics after breathing in smoke. Sadly, the pets died at the scene.

A fire service volunteer response team and The British Red Cross attended to give support to the resident.

A high pressure fan was then used to clear the property of smoke.

A fire service spokesman added: "The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, and possibly linked to an electrical item or electrical fault."

Crews left the scene just after 10pm.
