East Malling: Cllr Daniel Markham calls for action after Jack Cheeseman, from Mereworth, charged with drink-driving crash

A borough councillor is calling for action after a car smashed through a wall just metres from a row of houses.

Daniel Markham, who represents East Malling, said traffic calming measures are needed in the village before 'someone is killed.'

The crash happened at the corner of Mill Street and Clare Lane in the early hours of Saturday and a man has since been charged with drink-driving.

Jack Cheeseman, of Butchers Lane, Mereworth, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit.

The 24-year-old has been charged and is bailed to appear at Maidstone Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 7.

Cllr Markham (Con) said: "The pictures speak for themselves. The wall and iron fence have been totally destroyed.

"If this had happened during the day it could have resulted in a pedestrian being killed as children often play in that area.

"The time has now come for us to think of some serious measures to slow traffic coming down Clare Lane into the village. It's a 30mph limit and yet so many times I have witnesses motorist, in excess of 50mph struggling to make it around this bend.

"We now need traffic calming measure urgently along Clare Lane before someone is killed."

He added the bend is near the entrance to The Malling School.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 1.25am following a collision in East Malling. It was reported that a car had collided with a garden wall."

No injuries were reported.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: “We are concerned to hear of a crash at the corner of Mill Street and Clare Lane, we cannot comment on the details of the incident until the police investigation has been completed.

“We constantly strive to keep people as safe as possible on Kent’s road and are always concerned over any incident. We analyse crash data supplied by Kent Police for any trends that can be identified and potentially addressed by investing in safety measures.”

Figures reveal there were no other serious crashes on the stretch of road in the past year.
