National Highways tweeted at 7.46pm to say the accident had involved a crane which had "struck a bridge".

It provided an update at 8.13pm to say the M20 was closed London-bound between Junction 3 at Wrotham and Junction 1.

Recovery was arranged for the crane that fell over.

The accident has resulted in damage to the road surface on the inside two lanes and it will need to be resurfaced.

Police and the fire service were called, with the latter helping to deal with a fuel spillage.

A National Highways statement said: “National Highways service providers have advised that the carriageway requires resurfacing.

“A bridge inspector has assessed the bridge and confirmed minimal damage.

“Recovery is on scene and is underway for the crane and lorry.”

During the full motorway closure last night traffic was being diverted via the M26 and the M25.

One lane reopened just after midnight, but two lanes remain shut for resurfacing work which could cause delays during the morning rush.
