Lewisham train derailment causes chaos in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, and could be bad news for drivers in Aylesford

A train derailment that has caused commuter chaos this morning could cause issues with other transport if the line remains closed.

The freight service came off the tracks near Lewisham, and has disrupted Southeastern trains across Kent.

Commuters were stuck at Tunbridge Wells when all trains were suspended, and Sevenoaks trains were also heavily disrupted.

These cancellations and delays could continue for the rest of the day, with announcements already having been made about services into the afternoon.

But the derailment could spell turmoil for road users as well, if services are diverted.

Before Christmas, problems with a freight line near Lewisham meant trains were sent down the Medway Valley Line, causing heavy delays to drivers in Aylesford.

Although the problems on the line have now been sorted, and have nothing to do with this morning's incident, trains could once again be sent down through Aylesford to avoid Lewisham.

A Network Rail spokesman could not confirm whether this was the case, as the network operator is still working on a train plan.

The spokesman did however confirm that no one was hurt when the train slipped off the tracks. Engineers have been on site since 6.15am.

All services in and out of Cannon Street and Charing Cross are currently disrupted.
