A resident has complained to the Advertising Standards Authority about a leaflet detailing plans to redevelop Rochester Airport.

Bill McLennan, of Wilson Avenue, claims the document, which was released by the council when the project was unveiled, is misleading.

He says it is in breach of government advice on publicity for local authorities. He claims it is biased in favour of approving the project and neglects to mention the financial implications and concerns about noise.

The masterplan for the airfield in Maidstone Road, Chatham, is out for consultation.

If this is agreed, £4.4 million will be spent building a new concrete runway and improving facilities and creating up to 1,000 jobs.

Mr McLennan has called on the council to reconsider the proposal and a petition he circulated gained hundreds of signatures.

In his complaint to the ASA he writes: “Call us old fashioned but we believe that our elected ward councillors’ priority is the welfare of its electorate.”

Leader of the council Cllr Rodney Chambers (Con) said: “He’s got his views, he’s perfectly entitled to those.

“We’re confident that what we said was right, and we’re still in a consultation period.”
