Arrest after house fire in Luton Road, Chatham

A man was arrested following a suspected arson attack.

Emergency services were called to a fire in Luton Road near Bank Street at around 6am on Thursday.

The blaze is thought to have started in a carport and spread to the house next door.

A woman and two children were rescued from the property and taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Police have now confirmed they are treating this as a suspected arson.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed until Tuesday, October 10, pending further investigation.

Detective Sergeant Hannah Brown, of Medway CID, said: “We have been completing inquiries into this incident and are treating the fire as suspicious.

“Officers are appealing for witnesses who saw anybody acting suspiciously in the area before 6am or running from the scene shortly after the fire started, to contact the appeal line.

“Motorists with dashcams and local residents with private CCTV are also asked to check for footage that may assist the investigation.”
