by Lynn Cox

Arsonists may be responsible for a fire which broke out at a former riding school in Gillingham.

The fire, which destroyed part of the roof of the derelict building, broke out at about 2pm on Wednesday, August 12.

Firefighters from Medway fire station and a water-tender from Larkfield went to the empty Matthews Equestrian Centre, at Walnut Tree Farm, Lower Rainham Road.

They found the building well alight.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We were called at 2.10pm and when we arrived the roof of the building was well alight and the flames have already destroyed part of the roof.”

Police are investigating and have sent forensic officers to the scene.

Anyone with information should call police on 01634 891055 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Two Gillingham teenagers were arrested on suspicion of arson shortly after the incident.

The pair, both 14, were released on bail until Wednesday, September 16.
