Ryanair abuse: Mayor of Barcelona reaches out to Kent man who filmed incident

The deputy mayor of Barcelona has waded into the investigation into an alleged racist attack on a Ryanair plane asking the man who filmed the incident to get in touch.

David Lawrence, who lives in Rochester, was on the Ryanair flight from the Spainish city to Stansted airport when he captured the event on his mobile phone.

The 56-year-old watched on in horror as an elderly West Indian woman appeared to receive racist abuse where she was described as "ugly" by a fellow passenger.

More than six million people have viewed the video posted on David's social media account.

In a tweet, Barcelona's deputy mayor Jaume Asens said: "Racist behaviour and response of Ryanair is inadmissible.

"We are looking for the author of the video and witnesses to contact."

Mr Lawrence said he has already made steps to get in touch with him.

He said: "This is the type of response we have been looking for.

"The only sad part of it is that it has come from Spain and not our own government.

"I'm still baffled by the lack of response from Ryanair.

"We've made steps to get in contact and I am hoping to hear something today."

Speaking to KentOnline earlier this week, Mr Lawrence said he is "disgusted" by reports the man may not face prosecution.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We have worked to identify both parties involved in this incident and passed this information to the Spanish authorities, who are leading on this investigation.

"Our officers will continue to provide assistance where necessary throughout the course of this case."
