Boris Johnson told to call general election by Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti as parliament resumes

One of Boris Johnson's Conservative colleagues in Kent has called on the prime minister to call a general election.

As parliament resumes today, Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti told the House of Commons a vote should be called.

Rehman Chishti addresses parliament

It comes as MPs returned to Westminster after yesterday's ruling that Mr Johnson had unlawfully prorogued parliament.

Mr Chishti said: "I hope the Attorney General will agree with the views of the overwhelming majority of my constituents of Gillingham and Rainham that the continued delay on delivering the result of the referendum by October 31 is leading to the public lacking confidence in our democratic progress.

"The only way to resolve that is to have general election now and let the people decide."

Mr Chishti support Mr Johnson in the Tory leadership contest earlier in the summer - presenting him with a Gillingham FC shirt during an engagement.

This comes after Jeremy Corbyn, Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon all called for Mr Johnson - who has been in power for 62 days - to resign after the Supreme Court ruled his decision to suspend parliament for five weeks was unlawful.

Mr Johnson visited the Queen to seek permission to cancel the current session advising her the reasons were legitimate and legal.

He said it was to allow a Queen's Speech to outline his new domestic agenda.

But 11 of the country's top judges in the Supreme Court yesterday ruled the advice was illegal and the potential to "frustrate" the ability of parliament to conduct its constitutional business.
