Balaclava-clad teenager seen 'brandishing a knife' in Gillingham charged

A teenager is due to appear in court after allegedly being found with a knife.

The boy, 14, who cannot be named because of his age, was arrested after police were called to Gillingham yesterday evening.

The incident happened near the town's railway station at about 7pm after reports came in someone had been seen armed with a knife.

Officers were seen chasing several people on foot.

One woman, who saw the incident, but didn't want to be named, said: "There were five police cars and a van and officers chased several men through the alleyways.

"They caught up with one in Chicago Avenue and he was wearing a balaclava and a knife on him.

The boy has since been bailed by police to appear in court.

Police spokesman, Vicki Foster said: "Kent Police was called at 6.57pm to a report of a person seen carrying what was believed to be a knife near Gillingham Train Station.

"Officers attended and a 14-year-old boy was arrested near Chicago Avenue.

He was later charged with going equipped for theft and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

"He has been released on bail and is due to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 11."
