An enthusiastic Brexiteer has explained why he has taken his leave message to motorists, after draping a banner over the A2 near Thong, asking drivers to 'toot to leave'.

Ricki Montanarini and a number of others have been cheering commuters on from the Brewers Road bridge since 6am this morning.

According to Ricki, similar protests are happening all over the country but this is the first in Kent.

The Brexit Party supporter who lives in Higham said: "We are doing a bridge protest in support of Brexit - it's happening all over the country.

"We are organising these protests through Facebook and social media.

"This is the first one I know of in Kent."

As I stood with Ricki on the bridge quite a few car horns sounded, much to his delight.

The group aims to keep their flags flying through evening rush hour.

"It got busy this morning on the side which goes towards London and we'll be staying here waiting for people to come out of London later."

I asked Ricki if he is happy with the EU election results.

He said: "I am, yes. If you add all the remainer results together then obviously it's more than the Brexit Party but the Brexit Party are one party people have voted for because they're fed up with it.

"They want out and that's why they voted for them."

Ricki added he "most definitely" expected the result- where Nigel Farage's Brexit Party topped the poll in all of the local council areas and in many cases by huge margins more than 8,000 votes.

One motorist tweeted Highways England, saying the banner could "distract drivers".

Police were called at 7.20am but officers did not attend the scene.

A spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of protesters on a bridge over the A2 near Thong.

"Officers did attend the scene but it does not appear that any offences were being committed."
