Rochester Bridge turning on to the Esplanade will be closed to traffic

A road will be closed to continue the £10.5 million restoration of a bridge.

The right turn from Rochester Bridge on to the Esplanade, in Rochester has been closed to traffic overnight since Wednesday.

From tomorrow morning the road will be closed day and night until approximately the second week of September.

Signs will divert traffic throughout the works.

To avoid the closure, drivers are asked to continue down Corporation Street and take the left turn onto Bardell’s Terrace, which is on the left.

They will then loop around through Furrell’s Road and back onto the A2/High Street, returning to the bridge to turn left onto Rochester's Esplanade.

The works are part of the Rochester Bridges Refurbishment Project, and are to enable the removal of the final sections of the upstream parapet – including sealant, coping stones and steelwork – of the New Bridge.

Concrete repairs, kerb work, core drilling and parapet installation will also take place at this time.

This will be carried out by FM Conway, on behalf of the Rochester Bridge Trust.

Project manager Stuart Hercus, who is overseeing the works on behalf of Bridge Engineer Arcadis, said: “One of the Rochester Bridge Trust’s main priorities is to minimise disruption to the public, and so these works have been planned so as much as possible can be carried out at one time on this area.

"We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The project will see the granite which shields the benches at the top of the Esplanade being ripped out and recycled elsewhere in the £10.5 million project.
