Coach park could be built next to Rochester Fire Station

A coach park could be moved to next to a fire station.

Medway Council's cabinet members agreed on Tuesday to appropriate authority-owned “informal open space” in Curtis Way for the facility, which would replace the now-closed site in Gas House Road.

Officers have spent three years trying to find a suitable location for a new coach park, with 52 other options identified but discounted for varying reasons.

The proposed site is a former park-and-ride car park, and sits next to Rochester Fire Station.

Deputy leader Cllr Howard Doe (Con) said: “We have tried very hard all over the Rochester area to find a place that is easy to get to in terms of traffic management.

“In a sense, this is the last-chance saloon to find a decent site as we’ve exhausted all the options.”

According to council papers, a planning application will be submitted in December 2018 before being determined next year.

Cllr Rupert Turpin (Con) said he was currently unable to support the proposal as he wanted to hear the views of his constituents, with the proposal located in his Rochester South and Horsted ward.

He added: “I’m totally sympathetic to the need for a place for the coach park.

“You can see from the map that some of our residents live quite close to this proposed coach park, so it may be they have objections. I would need to take those into account and possibly represent them.”

The former coach park in Gas House Road closed earlier this month to make way for the Rochester Riverside regeneration project.
